Epoxy Resin Types and Application Considerations

Epoxy resin usually refers to organic compounds with two or more epoxy groups in the molecule. With few exceptions, their relative molecular weight is not high. There are many types of epoxy resins on the market, which leads to some classification methods.

Types of epoxy resins standard

Currently, there is no unified type of epoxy resin. Epoxy resins are classified by general strength, heat resistance level, and characteristics. There are 16 main varieties of epoxy resins, including general-purpose adhesives, structural adhesives, high-temperature adhesives, low-temperature adhesives, water-humid surface adhesives, conductive adhesives, optical adhesives, spot welding adhesives, epoxy resin adhesives, foaming adhesives, stretch adhesives, soft materials, sealants, specialty adhesives, latent curing adhesives, and civil building adhesives.

In industry, epoxy adhesives can also be classified into the following categories:

  • According to their main components, they can be divided into pure epoxy adhesive and modified epoxy adhesive.

  • They can be divided into mechanical epoxy adhesive, building epoxy adhesive, electronic epoxy adhesive, repair epoxy adhesive, transportation adhesive, and ship adhesive, etc.

  • According to the construction conditions, they can be divided into normal temperature curing adhesive, low temperature curing adhesive, and other curing adhesives.

  • According to their packaging forms, they can be divided into single-component adhesives, two-component adhesives, and multi-component adhesives.

There are also other methods, such as solvent-free adhesive, solvent-type adhesive, and water-based adhesive. However, component classification is widely used.

Understand the precautions for epoxy resin application

  • When using epoxy resin, it usually needs to be used together with epoxy resin curing agent. Before use, the epoxy resin and epoxy resin curing agent should be mixed in a ratio of 1:1 and stirred thoroughly, and then applied to the parts to be bonded.

  • If the epoxy resin is glued to a vertical or inverted surface, after applying the mixed solution of epoxy resin, it needs to be fixed with tape or 502 to prevent the adhesive from shifting and affecting the bonding effect of the epoxy resin.

  • In order to ensure the bonding effect of the epoxy resin, the temperature needs to be controlled between -50℃ and 150℃. If it is applied at room temperature, the epoxy resin will basically cure after about 6 hours of coating. If the temperature is 40 degrees, it will cure in about 3 hours.

  • If a thorough cure is required, it will take about ten days, and the bonding effect will be better at this time. In cloudy and humid weather, before using epoxy resin, it is usually necessary to heat the indoor temperature to around 20 degrees.

  • Before applying the epoxy resin, the surface of the object to be bonded needs to be wiped and cleaned with a cloth dipped in cleaner to achieve multi-faceted cleaning. Due to the fast curing speed of the epoxy resin, the prepared mixed epoxy resin needs to be used in time, otherwise it will become unusable after curing and cause material waste.

  • If the epoxy resin is to be widely used, it is necessary to ensure that the construction environment has good ventilation effect and prevent fireworks and firecrackers from appearing in the construction environment. If a large amount of epoxy resin leaks, open doors and windows for ventilation, pay attention to fireworks and firecrackers, then fill the epoxy resin location with sand, and finally clean up the epoxy resin with sand.
