Is Epoxy Resin the Same Material As Insulating Impregnated Paint?

With the rapid development of industry, the use of epoxy resin is more and more widely. Many people may have heard of the name epoxy resin, but do not know what epoxy resin is and what uses it has.


Definition of epoxy resin

Epoxy resin is a kind of high-molecule polymer which refers to a class of polymers containing more than two epoxy groups in the molecule. Epoxy resin, also known as artificial resin, is a kind of organic polymer containing more than two epoxy groups in the molecular structure, a thermosetting plastic. They can be cross-linked with various types of curing agents to form insoluble, non-melting polymers with three-way network structure, which has excellent insulation properties, mechanical properties and chemical stability. It is widely used in adhesives, coatings and other fields.


Are epoxy resins and insulating impregnated paints made of the same material?


Insulating impregnated paint is one of the three main insulating materials of winding insulation of electrical products. Through impregnation process, insulating paint penetrates and fills into the void and porosity of coil, wire groove or other insulating materials, and then solidifies coil wire into an insulating whole, and forms a continuous insulating layer on its surface to improve dielectric properties, mechanical properties, thermal conductivity properties and protection properties. The types of insulating impregnated paints can be divided into polydiphenyl ether modified class, polyester imide class, epoxy modified heat resistant polyester class, silicone class and heat resistant unsaturated polyester class, among which the insulating impregnated paint of epoxy modified heat resistant polyester class is made of epoxy resin. In other words, epoxy resins can be used to make insulating impregnated paints, but there is not only one kind of insulating impregnated paint.


The application of epoxy resin

 
Epoxy resin is widely used in coating, adhesive, construction, electronic equipment and so on. Because of its high insulation performance, strong structural strength and good sealing performance, epoxy resin has been widely used in the insulation and packaging of high and low voltage electrical appliances, motors and electronic components, especially in the encapsulation and insulation of silicon steel sheet of high-end motor core.


For example, 3M Scotch-WeldTM 2290 single-component epoxy protective coating is an excellent product commonly used in laminate insulation of silicon steel sheet. Compared to other insulating impregnated paint made from other materials, 3M's 2290 single-component epoxy protective coating is also used by many motor manufacturers for its superior performance in electrical insulation, water and salt spray resistance, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, vibration resistance and noise reduction.
