What Is Nylon 66?

The understanding of Nylon 66

Nylon 66 is a high-grade thermoplastic resin and an excellent polymeric material for manufacturing chemical fibers and engineering plastics. It is a raw material for advanced synthetic fibers and can be widely used in making knitted fabrics, tire cords, filter cloth, ropes, fishing nets, etc. After processing, it can also be made into elastic nylon, which is more suitable for producing civilian simulation silk products, swimsuits, rackets, and high-grade carpets. Nylon 66 is also the main raw material for engineering plastics and is used to produce mechanical parts, such as gears, lubricating bearings, etc. It can also replace non-ferrous metal materials as the casing of machines. Because the engineering plastics made of it have many advantages, such as small specific gravity, stable chemical properties, good mechanical properties, superior electrical insulation performance, easy processing and forming, etc., nylon 66 is widely applied in industrial fields such as automobiles, electronic appliances, mechanical instruments and meters, and has a bright future for further processing.

The characteristics of Nylon 66

The characteristics of Nylon 66: good stress cracking resistance; the best wear-resistant polyamide; good heat resistance, belonging to self-extinguishing materials; good self-lubricity, second only to polytetrafluoroethylene and polyoxymethylene; excellent oil resistance, but soluble in phenol and formic acid; high mechanical strength and good chemical stability; and weather resistance can be improved by adding carbon black to Nylon 66.

The application of Nylon 66

Nylon 66 is obtained by condensing hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. The common nylon is a highly crystalline polymer, and the melting point of Nylon 66 reported by different brands and testing methods is between 250 and 271℃. Since the amino groups in the amide group of the amorphous part of Nylon 66 are easy to combine with water molecules, the water absorption rate of Nylon 66 at room temperature is relatively high. Compared with general plastics, Nylon 66 has high impact toughness, excellent wear resistance, and low friction noise. In addition, Nylon 66 has strong tolerance to hydrocarbon solvents, especially gasoline and lubricating oil.

90% of the application of Nylon 66 is in the industrial products field. Among them, the amount of nylon used in the automotive industry accounts for 37% of the total, including oil storage tanks, cylinder heads, radiators, fuel tanks, water tanks, impellers, wheel covers, intake pipes, handles, gears, bearings, bushings, outer panels, connection pillars, etc. The second largest application field of Nylon 66 is the electronics and electrical industry, with a consumption of 22% of the total, including electrical housings, various connectors, connection pillars, etc. In addition, Nylon 66 is also widely used in cultural and office supplies, medical and health supplies, tools, toys and other occasions.
